Fall of Giants

So FINALLY I finished my book.  I started this epic last October.  Now I'm a fast reader and usually plow through books.  But this book was the book I was reading through both my surgeries, so that took months out as I wasn't able to concentrate on television for quite a while, never mind reading.  And also due to the fact that I usually only read for 30 minutes a day during my lunch break.  But that's has nothing to do with this book.  So let's dish...

This book begins right before World War I.  It is the first book of Ken Follett's Century Trilogy.  As I wrote above, it's a huge undertaking, but I really liked it.  This book follows the intertwining of several families in several different countries.  Russia, Germany, America, England & France.  Now this story is a ficitional story based in the reality of that time period.  It dealt with many facsets of the political horizion including Britain's women's sufferage.  I found it fascinating.  The story begins big and ends big.  Book 2 is due out in the fall and I plan to read it - I figure it will bring us right into World War II.  Should you read it?  Yes, especially if your into history and/or enjoy great writing.  Yay!

Jesus Christ Super Star

Last Saturday Michael Marie got Mr. Adam & I tickets to see Jesus Christ Super Star on Broadway.  Lucky we saw it as it closes on July 1, 2012.  How was it?

I liked it.  The show was very presentational.  It was handled like a concert.  I have to say the men in the show were excellent, well except Jesus himself.  I found him distant particularly in the opening of the show.  As the show went on Jesus became more present. His voice was great.  I really liked Judas.  But I have to say Mary Magdalene was bad, girl couldn't act.   No, no she couldn't.  And her singing - meh.  There was also a weird Jesus/Judas/Mary threesome thing inferred.  I've seen it before, but it was so subtle that it seemed like decision half-made.  If I really wanted to pick apart a number it would be Herod's number.  It wasn't great, it didn't suck, but it wasn't the show stopper it could have been.  Overall, I think show failed by bringing the entire LA cast to New York.  Lot's of great voices, very little stage presence.  Should you see it?  YOU CAN'T - it's closing.

PROMETHEUS

Two weeks ago Mr. Adam & I went to go see Prometheus on the IMAX in 3D.  I liked it.  Well, let me 'splain:

I found the special effects great.  And I really like the whole Sci-Fi genre.  So on that alone I found this show good, really good as a matter of fact.  But and this is a big "BUT" - I didn't really care for the story.  There I said it.  This whole "meet your maker" thing.  Nope, doesn't interest me.  Especially if we come from aliens.  Espeicailly if they're aliens who want to kill us.  And by kill us, I mean with the alien that was made famous from the movie Alien.  So yes, yes this movie is a precursor to the The Alien Saga - but a good one?  It's OK.  Should you see it?  Sure, it's a good Sci-Fi flick.

We Need To Talk About Kevin

I rented on my iPhone this movie.  I had heard great things about it.  Wow.  That's all I can say.  Tilda Swinton is great in this film.  But let me tell you about the story.

It's about a bad kid.  From the birth of her child, Kevin is a difficult child.  Crying all the time, back-mouthing his mother and basically being obstinate, malicious & manipulative.  As Kevin grows he becomes worse & worse.  John C. Riley plays her husband - a doting father who believes "boys will be boys".  The whole movie is presented in flashback form.  With the "incident" being mentioned but not explained until the ending.  This movie is disturbing.  Very, very disturbing and Tilda is great.  She goes from a strong young woman to a meek, victimized shell of a woman.  Very moving.  I really enjoyed this film.  Should you see it?  Yes, I don't think it will get you inside the mind of a killer or anything, but you certainly will reconsider you stance on smacking a kid.

Harvey

So last Friday night Michael Marie took Sam, Mr. Adam and me to go see Harvey on Broadway.  What did you think ryan charisma?  Well,...  I'm glad I didn't purchase the tickets.  Let's begin there,

First off, it's an old fashioned play, in the veins of Arsenic & Old Lace.  The show was very well directed.  And the stylized acting was done well, very well in many cases.  The set was excellent as were the set changes.  They were done with 3 turntables on the stage.  But it was still an old play.  An old, dusty, boring play.  Not all the stars in the cast, not all the wonderful stagecraft in the world made this show any more exciting or dare I say it?  "Funny."  It just kind of meandered along with very little... anything.  I was so excited to see this production as I didn't know the story (I didn't see the movie) and I really liked all the celebrities in the cast.  But no.  No, no, no.  The production was charming, it was done well, but the play itself was still Harvey - no matter how you sliced it.  Should you go see this show?  Absolutely not, well maybe if you get free tickets.  Sad really.
