True Colors Tour - True 35th Birthday Party

Monday, June 18, 2007 - my birthday. I took off from work and arranged a fabulous pre-concert, birthday cocktail party for 12 of my closest friends here in NYC. Mr. Adam & I made arrangements for everyone to show up precisely at 3:30PM. We had fabulous hors d'oeuvres and I infused a few gallons of vodka with pineapple for delicious pineapple cosmopolitans. I know, I know - you're all thinking "Ryan Charisma, you're SO continental!" Well, yes, yes I am. But regardless. Mr. Adam was so helpful with the planning and execution of this soiree. Thank you Mr. Adam - I love you! I, of course, was the bar tender. I won't go into the gifts I received as that's tacky to do in public. I'll just write "thank you" to all of you who did think of me.
At 7:00PM - we all went to Radio City Music Hall to see the True Colors Tour. This was quite a treat.
First off, I got a fabulous drink in Radio City Music Hall cocktail glass and a birthday tiera. I am a princess after all. Then we checked out Radio City and enjoyed the mini-gay pride that was going on all around. I love the gays - they're so fun. We took our seats and the show began. I mean, our timing was perfect really.
The Dresden Dolls: They were OK, a little "goth" for my tastes, but I did enjoy their rendition of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" - very classy. Although the pianist was the lead vocalist, I have to say the show was the drummer. He was pure craziness, with costume changes and all. So the big question is "Ryan Charisma - did you like them?" Um, ...Not really.
Margaret Cho: She was funny lady! And of course, as everyone knows - she's lost allot of weight. She looked good. Well, for a girl.
Debbie Harry: America's favorite geriatric rocker. Sadly Ms. Harry gave us nothing from her Blondie days and only one of her solo hits "French Kissing in the USA." The rest of Debbie's set was all new stuff from her forthcoming CD due out in August.
Rosie O'Donnell: She was great. She mentioned her bid to become the new host of "The Price is Right." I kind of hope she gets it, except I do find the show boring. Yes, I said it...."boring." I really enjoyed Rosie's set. I never got the feeling that anything was "off limits" for her to talk about but sadly she never mentioned that festering bitch Elizabeth Hasselbeck. God I hate that faux Republican bitch. I hope on her maternity leave from the View she either dies or gets "let go."
Erasure: AWESOME! I'll say it again: AWESOME! Sadly they didn't do my favorite Erasure song "Alien" but that's OK, I'll survive. Their energy was up and they had a new backup singer. In the zillions of times I've seen Erasure - I've never seen them with a white girl backup singer. But they have one now. They did a lovely mix of their old & new songs. Particularly I loved their live rendition of Sunday Girl & Sucker For Love. So absolutely fun.
Cindy Lauper: This girl can sing! And sing she did. for quite a while. She did old songs, new songs, new arrangements, she had it all and it was good. As usual, Cindy goes directly into the audience to be with the fans. She was absolutely beautiful .... like a rainbow!
The entire evening ended with the whole cast onstage singing "True Colors" - very touching.
Odd, but I still don't think the red states think of me as an equal. Weird right?

Spderman 3 - IMAX

Michael, Mr. Adam & myself went to see Spiderman 3 on the IMAX Sunday night. First my delicious people I must tell you that I was warned by EVERYBODY not to see this let down of a movie. All last summer, we had streets shut down at all hours for the filming of this movie so as a New Yorker I was excited about the release of this film. Who knew everyone would hate it so much? Who knew so much money was wasted on CGI special effects? Who knew Kirsten Dunst had such big gums and small teeth? Anyway, this movie was saved for me by the fact that the special effects were awesome on the huge IMAX screen. If it had been in a regular theater or in a home on DVD, this movie would have sucked ass. Luckily I got the thrill ride from the IMAX screen. Why do Hollywood movies have to suck so badly? Why? I have to warn everyone out there "DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS MOVIE - DO NOT EVEN BOTHER WITH IT ON DVD!" There, now don't you feel better? I know I do.

Avenue Q

Hey sexy people, I can't believe I waited so long to see this show! It was very funny. My dear friend Dennis, Mr. Adam & I went to see this matinee on Saturday. Not only did I have the best company, but I also go to see a really fun, award winning show.
Now, this show is basically an adult Sesame Street. Puppets & all. And, I just want to go "on record" as saying that the two male puppeteers are HOT. And I don't mean they're cute, but they are hot. Talented & Hot, that is. I'm sure most of you have seen this show as it's playing everywhere by now since it first came out in 2004. But sadly, I never got around to it. Shame, shame on me. The good news is that I got to share this experience with my dear friend Dennis. Who is probably reading this right now! Hi Dennis! Anyway, it was nice to see a play with him as usually we've been in the shows together. Quite a switch from being on stage together to sitting in the audience together. But much more relaxing. Anyway, I really did like the show, although I didn't find it side-splitting hysterical like I was told it would be. It was funny. Just funny.

Restoration Friendship

This past weekend was quite a weekend for me. First I'll tell you all about my reuniting with one of my dearest friends. It had been over a year since my friend Dennis & I spoke and sadly, even longer since we've seen each other. But we re-connected and Dennis came to NYC from Massachusetts for a few days. We chatted, talked and chatted some more. Saw a show, Avenue Q, and had a lovely dinner with all our friends at Vynl. It was SO good to see him. We were wonderfully close friends who fell apart when our lives took turns that neither of us saw coming. As life does, it knocks you for a loop when you least expect it on a random Tuesday afternoon or any day for that matter. One is never ready for what life can dish out. But the best we can do is roll with it's punches. My friend Dennis has been doing just that...rolling with life's punches. And I'm sure some of those punches hurt badly. He's doing so much better now for anyone who has inquired. I can't wait to see him again! Kisses out to Dennis!

Xanadu on Broadway - seriously

I have one thing to say "hy-fucking-sterical." This play Xanadu on Broadway was a great fun show. If you liked the movie you will love this show. Let me start at the very beginning...

Before the show began, Douglas Carter Bean (recently nominated for writing "Little Dog Laughed") addressed the audience as the book writer for this show on stage. Mr. Bean told us that after the previous night's performance the male lead "James Carpinello" had broken his foot and our performance would be the first performance of his understudy. "Damn!" - I thought. But what 'cha gonna do? A broken foot in a show that calls for heavy roller skating means allot of time out. Poor James Carpinello. Moving right along, Mr. Bean also informed the audience that "yes, Little Dog Laughed will be made into a movie starring Ms. White (who won the tony this year for the show). "Excellente" - I thought. So on with the show, understudies and all.

The show follows the 1980's movie Xanadu almost perfectly. Every song in the movie is included in the stage production as well as a few extra songs from that era by both ELO & Olivia Newton John. Specifically Evil Woman & Have You Never Been Mellow. Both fit into the show wonderfully. This musical doesn't take itself seriously one iota. It pokes fun at itself with a wonderfully sarcastic sense of humor that literally made me split my sides at some points. The lead actress Kerry Butler is so damn funny I can't even begin to tell you how she is so gifted for comedy. Her faux Australian accent is the best. Her 9 muse sisters are played by 4 women & 2 men. I know your thinking "Ryan Charisma, that's only 6 muse sisters - well, there are 2 orchestra sisters "& Bob" playing muse sisters as well. So funny. The sets are sparse, but I never knew Mt. Olympus & Pegasus were art deco. But they are. And oh so funny. Really, you must see this show to believe it. This musical was crafted with love for the movie and it shows. If you're a fan of the movie - you'll love this. I only wish I had seen it with Olivia Newton-John to see her reaction.

The Catcher In The Rye

It's that time! Time for me to tell you about another book I've just finished. This time I read a book that somehow I didn't end up reading while going through high school - The Catcher in the Rye. First off, I must tell you, that I'm glad I missed this book while I was a teen. I thought this book sucked. It was so adequately written, I fail to see why this book was considered a classic or banned by some schools. Sure the language is bad, but the book doesn't do anything. It says nothing. It starts nowhere and ends up nowhere.
The main character Holden Caufield is a young teen who (for lack of a better word) needs a good smack upside the head. He's kicked out of 'another' school for not trying. He takes all his money and blows it on a few days in NYC before going home to his folks to face the music of his being expelled yet again. Personally, this kid needed a good old fashioned beating. I volunteer my mother. I found the main character quite the opinionated asshole. I hated every other thought that he had. And he swore far too much for my tastes. Not to mention that I cuss like a truck driver in real life. So I'm no prude at all. I really, really detested this Holden character. If he were my kid, I'd abort any other kids that follow for fear they'd end up like this over privledged maggot in the book. Apparently this book is for 'angry white boys'. I don't get it. I was never one of those 'angry white boys' in school. They suck and deserve to have the fear of God put into them too. J.D Salinger sucks! Don't read this shitty book, it will only aggravate you.

Onion Rings? That's it?

There it is, the big ending to The Sopranos. An order of onion rings. No Carmella didn't die, no Meadow didn't turn her father in. No Tony isn't paying for the horrible life he leads. Nothing. Not even a blood bath that the show is famous for. Nothing. What an absolute travesty! I gave this show so much of my time and this ending is all the writers could come up with? Sad & pathetic. The whole "lady or the tiger ending" is old. I wanted some creative mind to give me an ending equal to, or possibly even better than, the ending of Six Feet Under. Sadly, the writers of the Sopranos are obviously not that talented. Pity.

Smack This Bitch Up!

What the fuck is this slut doing out of prison? I'm so sick and tired of this nobody getting everything. If I were in her shoes you bet your sweet ass that I'd be spending three months in prison. Why is she out? Will someone please tell me? Paris Hilton is evil, but I don't only blame her. I blame her parents who should be killed on sight for raising such a little bitch of a daughter. I blame the California court system for facilitating this bullshit, but most of all I blame society for allowing her to get away with this. I now OFFICIALLY am turning my back on this drunkard. I don't want to see her in the news. I don't want to hear about her on the radio I'm done. And if the media is listening at all. You'd be best to not report on her anymore for I WILL change the station, burn the newspaper and won't buy the magazine. I'm done with this over-privileged, drunken, sex tape making, faux singing, drugged out, non-law abiding, publicity whore. She may be thin but she's an ugly beast. I hope she dies. And soon! Bad celebrity - your 15 minutes are up!
UPDATE: She's back! GOOD - Paris Hilton can rot in jail for all I care. I don't want to see or hear about this over-privledged do-nothing ever again. And I still think her parents should be to blame!

28 Weeks Later

Thrill ride everyone! Jump on! Mr. Adam took me to see this last Saturday night. We had spent the whole day unpacking my final box from my move in (yes it's complete - yeah!). We both really like the first movie 28 Days Later so we wanted to see this sequel.
It was great. It wasn't quite as scary as the first, but it made up for it in the action. Anyone who saw the first will remember that the theme of these movies is a new take on the old zombie movies. But there is a difference these zombies don't want to eat your brains - they want to kill you and violently. And these zombies don't schlep slowly towards you, they run at full speed without regard for pain. Very scary. I totally recommend this film, if you can't see it on the big screen - it will be just as good on DVD with a big ole' bowl of popcorn. It's all the "RAGE"!
